Public Invited to Preview PBS Documentary on Flagler’s Keys Over-Sea Railroad

KEY LARGO, Florida Keys – A preview of a documentary, chronicling the conception and construction of Henry Flagler’s Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad, is set for Sunday, Jan. 8, at the Murray E. Nelson Government and Cultural Center, and the public is invited to attend without charge.

The event is to begin at 4 p.m. with a reception and screening of the hour-long “Flagler’s Train: The Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad” is scheduled for 5 p.m. There is limited seating available and RSVPs are mandatory no later than Wednesday, Jan. 4, to 305-424-4025 or send an e-mail request.

Produced by WPBT2, in partnership with the Monroe County Tourist Development Council and Flagler Real Estate Services, the program features archival imagery, personal correspondence and original drawings of the Over-Sea Railroad project, tracing daily reports of the human struggles and technological achievements needed to complete the railway that some called the “Railroad That Went to Sea.”

The broadcast premiere is scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, on WPBT2, the Public Broadcasting System affiliate for South Florida and the Keys.

The program is to be offered for national PBS syndication in the spring of 2012, and is airing during the centennial anniversary year of the completion of the Over-Sea Railroad.

Former U.S. Senator Bob Graham is set to attend the screening.
